August: The Story of a Nation (Blurb)

August: The Story of a Nation is a compelling contemporary story exploring nationalism, empathy, and the intricate dynamics that define what it means to be a nation. The intersecting lives of Charles Terri, a prominent political commentator, Katherine Laurie the once President now activist, and Roderick Pravo, an immigrant seeking refuge in the island nation of August.

The story begins with Charles Terri, a powerful and charismatic figure who commands a significant influence over August's population and government as the leading political commentator. Charles Terri uses this influence to bend the minds of August to his reality of nationalist hate.

His once confidant Katherine Laurie is forced from the office of president, and her homeland by Charles and the Loyalist who support him. She fights against the idea of cultural immobility, and the idea that the external is a threat. She fights against the growing voice of fascism. In an act that will label her a traitor, she works with the UN to bring down the government of August.

Roderick Provo represent humanity in the fight against xenophobia which overtakes the country he strives to call home. He faces the harsh realities of life as an immigrant, dealing with discrimination and exploitation. Despite these challenges, Roderick remains hopeful, driven by the desire to rebuild his life. A reminder of the life he left comes over the waves with the arrival of his brother, Alexander, who has endured severe hardships and disfiguration under the oppression of their homeland.

Throughout the story, Charles and Roderick's lives run in parallel, offering a stark juxtaposition between the powerful and the powerless. This is mediated by Katherine Laurie, who aims to show us there are people who will help. That each of us can make a difference. Charles’s influence continues to warp the public mind, while Roderick’s personal journey sheds light on the immigrant experience and the struggles for dignity and acceptance in a foreign land.

The climax of the story sees Charles grappling with the unforeseen consequences of his rhetoric, the virus which he birthed into the world. Roderick is forced to confront a world where his existence threatens a nation. Where his hope only acts to ignite the help of a nation. Katherine is left feeling powerless as she watch the nation she love become consumed by the virus of hate.
